A new era of flavour is arriving in South African kitchens as Dutoit introduces its latest innovation: sweet onions. Known for their mild flavour, low pungency, and versatile culinary applications, these onions are poised to become a favourite for home cooks and chefs alike.
“We’re excited to launch sweet onions as part of our 2024-2025 onion season,” says Pieter du Toit, Commercial Director – Vegetable. “Their unique flavour profile opens up new possibilities for cooking and dining, and they represent our ongoing commitment to innovation and meeting consumer demand.”
Unlike traditional onions, sweet onions have a delicate sweetness that makes them perfect for raw use in salads, salsas, and sandwiches, or caramelised for an extra touch of flavour in cooked dishes. This product is not just a local offering, it’s destined for export markets as well, showcasing South Africa’s agricultural excellence on a global stage.
The launch of sweet onions comes during a season defined by resilience and adaptability. Heavy winter rains initially delayed planting, but the arrival of warmer weather in November 2024 allowed Dutoit’s crops to catch up. Despite the challenges, the team’s use of advanced farming technology has ensured the successful introduction of this exciting new product.
“Our GPS-guided tractors, drone technology, and smartphone-controlled irrigation systems have been crucial in ensuring consistent quality,” says Pieter. “These tools allow us to respond to challenges proactively, guaranteeing that every sweet onion meets the standards our buyers expect.”
To maintain peak quality, Dutoit’s sweet onions are stored in cooling rooms maintained at a precise 1°C, preserving their freshness and ensuring a steady supply for both local and international markets. When it’s time to pack, advanced camera systems carefully inspect each onion, ensuring only the best make it to shelves.
Sustainability remains central to Dutoit’s operations. Improved drainage systems and efficient irrigation practices have minimised water usage while maintaining crop health. The company has also increased the use of cooling storage to address ongoing export logistics challenges, ensuring their products reach customers in top condition.
Dutoit’s first batch of sweet onions hit the shelves during December 2024. Their arrival signalled not only a new product for consumers but also a milestone for the South African agricultural sector.
“This is more than just an onion; it’s a testament to our innovation and adaptability as a company,” says Pieter. “We’re excited to see how consumers embrace sweet onions in their kitchens, and we’re proud to lead this culinary shift.”
