Social responsibility is at the heart of how we operate, and we’re dedicated to uplifting the communities where our people live and work. From maintaining local primary schools and offering tertiary study loans, to supporting healthcare, social development, and youth sports, we invest in initiatives that make a real difference.

Crèches & Aftercare Centres

On six of our Koue Bokkeveld farms, we run registered crèches with aftercare facilities. Instead of going home to an empty house, children spend their afternoons in safe, stimulating spaces where they enjoy a meal, get help with homework, play games, and access early learning resources.
  • Staff members live on the farms and receive ongoing ECD (Early Childhood Development) Level 4 training.
  • All centres are registered with the Department of Social Services and follow approved programmes.
  • Facilities are equipped with indoor and outdoor learning toys, ensuring holistic intellectual, social, and physical development.
  • Children participate in annual Eisteddfods, reading days, and local sports events. Centres now include computer labs with the Cami programme, sponsored by the Waitrose Foundation.
  • Dutoit builds, maintains, and co-funds the centres, with additional support from government subsidies.
We’re also expanding: an old building in the Eastern Cape is currently being renovated to open a new crèche.
Schools
Three primary schools operate on Dutoit farms, run by the Department of Education but maintained by the Company. Beyond infrastructure, we support schools in several ways:
Collaboration & support
Hosting an annual School Forum for principals and Dutoit representatives, plus ongoing assistance to high schools where needed
Facilities & logistics
Maintaining sports fields and facilities and providing transport for learners to sporting events
Educational initiatives
Introducing programmes like Juicy Gems, where children learn coding skills while exploring the role of fruit and vegetables in wellness, sustainability, and the environment
Projects that have impact
Launched in 1993 with R300,000 in seed capital, this self-sustaining fund helps children of employees access tertiary education.

Since then, 331 students have been supported with affordable loans, empowering the next generation of professionals.
Empowered growth
Crispy Farming
Launched more than 20 years ago as a Dutoit BEE initiative, Crispy Farming was created to empower more farm and packhouse workers. Today, it has grown into a formidable player in the fruit farming sector, a true success story of transformation and opportunity.

What started as a small empowerment venture has evolved into a large-scale, sustainable farming operation, with plans for further expansion and greater impact in the agricultural industry.

Cape Fruit Coolers offers a pallet cooling service for the fruit exporters that make use of the Cape Town Harbour. CFC prides itself in perfect protocol handling coupled with personal service levels unheard of in this very important part of the cold chain.

Lumbri manufacture organic compost on a large scale with the aim to rehabilitate soils in the Ceres region where the natural balance has been largely disrupted over many years by the use of chemical fertilisers.

Crispy Group consists of farming operations that focus on the production of pome fruit, and cold storage facilities that provide medium- to long-term cold-storage services for fresh produce. The business was established in 2002 as an empowerment project in partnership with workers at Dutoit.

DLX is a transport and logistics company offering a cost effective service from the farm gate into the supermarket depot. This is done through a pool of rotating lugs and an in-house truck fleet.

Bokkenfontein is a joint venture with the Reynolds family who farms in the Northern part of the Koue Bokkeveld. The goal is to build this family farm into a jewel of the Koue Bokkeveld based on secure water resources, fertile soil and has an excellent climate for growing high quality fruit and vegetables.

Dutoit Services
Dutoit Services is a fresh produce depot facility in Johannesburg that provides value adding services for the producer to the market place. The business is mainly focused on direct and retail business aiming to deliver fast and flexible services at a competitive price. Good quality, on time delivery and volume growth are the value contributors from Dutoit Services for both the producer and customer.
